The new design of chisels and gouges was aimed firstly at the improvement of the ergonomics; the overall construction was also changed. The handle of chisels and gouges has got a shape of two interconnected ellipsoids. The front part is grooved and it is intended for support of the thumb. This is characteristic for chisels, gouges and carving gouges. The support of the thumb significantly improves the overall control over the power and direction of the cut. The overall lifetime of the chisels was greatly extended by the change of construction. The inner tang goes through the whole handle and at the end there is a pressed on metal impact ferrule. The biggest force is therefore lead through the steel tang directly to the blade and there is only a minimal stress on the wooden handle. Gouges and carving chisels use a standard mounting of the blade. However at the back of the handle there is a pressed on impact end, which is made of durable plastic. It encircles and protects wood fibres and prevents the handle from splitting. This extends quite a lot the lifetime of the gouge and the rear part of the handle always remains smooth and comfortable to use. The handles of carving chisels have got a little bit different shape which allows much more options of gripping. Bachelor degree project, 2010 (FUD UJEP) |
